BALANCE IN THE HANGING

Balance In The Hanging

Hedaya was the first. It represents my obsession with all things dark, gitchy, and introspective. Music for bedwetters, no doubt!

Balance in the Hanging probably has it's origins in the onset of an early mid-life crisis (the equivalent of getting a porsche penis extension without the price tag). I think the concept in my head at the time was to merge Helmet with The Church, while getting Dave Lombardo in on drums.

I first started messing about with a Tascam cassette-based 4-track in around 1988. My high school generously allowed me to borrow the thing on weekends and school holidays and over the course of one summer, I developed what has turned out to be a lifelong obsession with recorded sound and writing material. I wish I still had some of those horrible demos from back then, but alas....I guess someone out there figured the world doesn't need to hear my adolescent Quiet Riot knockoffs.

Cut to 20 years later and I'm still at it (sans the Quiet Riot obsession and I've migrated from a bedroom in my parents house to erm...a spare bedroom in an apartment I co-habit with my understanding significant other. Over the years I've recorded, produced, interned (i.e. cleaned), and worked in studios in varying degrees of quality but it never quite hit the spot for me. There's something to be had by spending 8 hours listening to the same drum loop over and over knowing you're not paying for it by the hour....

Hence "the clever bedsit" came to pass circa 2004 somewhere in North London. While my home studio is no longer within the confines of an actual bedsit these days (the significant other would draw the line at that) the philosophy stays the same: work within the space in which you (mostly) exist, let your life effect your music, and bloody well enjoy it.

Welcome to my bedsit, sorry about the smell.....

Simon Kean.
